Principles of Leadership: Cannon

" Cannon"

In musical terms, a “Cannon” is defined as a melody that is repeated exactly by a different voice entering a short interval after the original; a melodic rule. To properly execute a musical “Cannon” you must follow the original melody to the “T.” There are no deviations or short -cuts.

If you ever had a chance to meet local Atlanta professional Jason Lutes (Strategy Consultant- Nu Royal Group, Owner- B3), you are familiar that he his known internationally as a Policy and Procedures advocate. From his extensive travel working in the private sector as a consultant, he quickly recognized that systems, policies and procedures are the heart of every organization. Policies and Procedures answer the “what” and “how” questions for individuals within an organization. They become the rules that provide the framework for the organization, keeping all involved functioning on task.

Just as policies and procedures provides a great outline and foundation; when it comes to leadership, there are principles and standards that should remain constant, regardless of the setting. Incorporating various systems and utilizing productive business models are indeed helpful. But far more than strategies to achieve success, leadership is the ethical code which calls out to all Men from deep within. When you hear the familiar sound of leadership, it is understood and embraced by every member, no matter where they are on the totem pole. It is the divine spark that builds families, teams and organizations. True leadership is the upward pull, creating distinction and achievement for the ENTIRE team. If this is a constant focus, the melodic rule, not deviating from the principles and standards for all....we will hear the “Cannon” of humanity.

There are no absolutes for developing in leadership. But there are principles that can be used for framework and measurements. As you assume the role of a leader, whether it is in your personal life or among a team, it is your responsibility to have in place standards and principles. During a meeting, Jason reminded me, “ Our goals may change but our standards will remain.” Jason Lutes , along with workplace experts, Thuy and Milo Sindell have identified a few examples that could be helpful.

Here are a few “Cannons” that you can utilize for yourself that others can follow.

  • Respect (others) - Earn It

  • Humility – Get Used to It

  • Service – Provide It

  • Gratitude – Realize It

  • Humor- Find It
